Postgraduate Qualification Training
Bioinformatics
Course for the Graduate School 2011
MSc/Postgraduate Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate
Bioinformatics
Genetic Epidemiology and Bioinformatics
The course is based on the collaboration of academic staff with expertise in Genetic Epidemiology and Bioinformatics, from the BB Unit in addition to several other Schools from within Cardiff University.
Commencement Date :
September/October each year
Length of Course :
The length of the course depends on the qualification to be obtained and whether the student is attending on a full-time or part-time basis. The course can be completed on a full-time basis over one year or on a part-time basis, generally over two years and no more than four years.
The Postgraduate Diploma and MSc courses consist of a taught element of 7 modules and, for a full-time student, the modules are run concurrently over a 9 month teaching period. Following this the MSc students will undertake a 3 month research project making the length of the course 1 year.
The Postgraduate Certificate course consists of a taught element of 3 - 4 modules and these can be taken on a part time basis over no more than 4 years.
Mode of Study :
The course is based on a combination of lectures, practical sessions and workshops, guided reading and tutorial sessions, in addition to course assignments.
The course intends to develop the appropriate complementary skills to provide students with the multidisciplinary genetic epidemiological and bioinformatic skill set required to work effectively in the post genomic era.
The first part of the core modules will enable students to obtain background understanding of biosciences, statistics, and computer science for bioinformatics. These core modules are designed to provide participants from different backgrounds with a working knowledge of subject areas not covered by their first degree. The second part of the core modules cover epidemiology, biostatistics and bioinformatics. By having the option to choose amongst the Specialist modules , the student is able to specialise in either genetic epidemiology or bioinformatics thus providing a tailored approach to future career development.
MSc students will undertake a research project which requires the student to examine in-depth issues related to the specialist area of their choice.
Entry qualifications, experience or other criteria
:
The normal entry requirement is that students should possess a good initial degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioscience or medicine; entry may be considered by course administration officer if no formal qualification exists but sufficient experience can be presented (application, viva and employer reference).
Students with a psychology/neuroscience, bioscience or medical background need to have a basic knowledge of computing.
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide proof of their proficiency in the English language before they can be accepted. Applicants must have satisfied one of the English Language requirements specified by Cardiff University.
The course applications team will consider equivalent qualifications.
Further details can be found in the Information Sheet and Course Programme Specification which also includes a listing of the modules. An outline of the course contents for all of the modules can be found in Module Outlines. Details on fees and how to apply can be found on the Prospective Students page.
